Advanced Course 1 - Personnel Management

Context: The course is based in the Human Resources department in a large e-learning company based in Brighton. Sue Riding, the Head of Department, presents various key aspects of her job.

Vocabulary areas: the course presents the language of personnel management, applications and interviews, promotion, appraisal, maternity, training and health.

In the course you will practise:

Week 1

  • Content: Sue introduces herself, her company and her job. Introduces present recruitment needs and the vacancy to be filled.

Week 2

  • Content: Sue talks about the shortlist.

Week 3

  • Content: Sue assesses the interviews and announces the appointment.

Week 4

  • Content: Promotion philosophy and system in the company.

Week 5

  • Content: The appraisal system.
  • Grammar: Tenses: wishes and regrets, future
  • Functional focus: Description, evaluating, speculating, hopes ambitions, tact and diplomacy

Week 6

  • Content: A company trainer talks about his programme.
  • Grammar: Conditionals, passives, inf/…ing forms
  • Functional focus: Negotiating, describing

Week 7

  • Content: Aspects of Health & Safety; the company's contingencies for staff welfare sick/ maternity leave etc.
  • Grammar: Obligation, passives, conditionals
  • Functional focus: Regulations

Week 8

  • Content: Sue sums up the previous units as being representative of her job.
